Mermelstein clearly sees no contradiction

Auschwitz and Buchenwald survivor Mel Mermelstein pictured holding the doctored version of the famous Buchenwald photograph, and holding a copy of the revised edition of his book which features the original version of the photograph. The photograph top-left appeared on page 61 of the October 18, 1981 edition of Newsweek*, the photograph top-right appeared on the cover of the October 19, 1981 edition of The Register (Orange County, CA). Yup, these picture was published just a single day apart!

What's quite interesting though, is that in version of the doctored photograph Mermelstein is holding, the man on the top bunk in the centre of the photograph doesn't have the top of his head cropped off, as he does in all other versions of the photograph I've yet seen, including the supposed "original" at the National Archives in Washington (No.178 on the list)

* The picture is cropped from a scan I made of page 61 of this edition of Newsweek at the British Library. Their scanners automatically emboss "The British Library" across all images, but a cropped photograph of a photocopy I also made of the Newsweek page can be viewed here.
